One of
the reasons I have been so fortunate with building a large organization is because of the
people that joined my team. The highest current status in Cell Tech's marketing plan is
that of Double Diamond and that means that each Double Diamond has created at least 5
Executives (means a minimum of 20 people) on their first level and a total of at least 20
Executives in their organizations. I have been blessed with 8 Double Diamonds on my first
level.
I went to a seminar once in Los Angeles given by Gilles Arbour, a Canadian Double Diamond, and he mentioned that one friend of his, Harriett Fels, a Double Diamond on his first level, had earned him over a million dollars in commissions. He smiled and said, "Maybe I should send her one of those American post cards that says, Thanks a Million."
I have also been helped by many other leaders in Cell Tech who so openly shared their wisdom and this helped me to understand a lot of different systems other than the tape system. Elsewhere, especially in the transcripts, I tell the story of how a lot of these people built their downlines, so here I want to discuss much more the philosophy behind them. As I have said, network marketing allows each individual to express their own unique gifts, and every one of my lines has been built in a different way, with each person choosing to do what worked for them, rather than my imposing what I do or like to do. I always share what I like to do, but I was not responsible for creating their success. They were, and I am glad, because I like having people that accept personal responsibility.
It is said that a
great leader is not the one with the most followers,
but the one who creates the most leaders.
I like to aspire to greatness within myself, and I like to accept responsibility for myself, for my successes and for my setbacks. It had never been my dream to create a network that I had to baby-sit. This does not allow for time freedom, which is one of the rewards of this business that I most cherish. Fortunately for me the people that became part of my team felt like I did. I think it's true, that like attracts like.
My momentum really started when a couple I will call R and L, and Beverly and Tom McPeek both started building quickly. R and L liked the cold market tapes that I was using, and Bev and Tom were really natural networkers, and felt more inclined to start to build by word of mouth. We were all using the tape created by Ray and Kim Cassano, and were enjoying wonderful results. Some people mailed it out to strangers, others just handed it out to immediate family, others did some of both. In other words, everyone was doing their thing. So the McPeeks were mixing cold and warm markets while the Kalvins started concentrating like I had on more cold market. In my case I felt like it was too soon to go to my warm market, it had been just a few weeks since I had so passionately proposed a different networking company, so I wanted to show them some success before I talked to them again. I think R and L preferred the cold market, perhaps for different reasons.
So as early as February I started to feel some momentum, which got me really excited. There were some other people, Renae Van Thiel from Oregon and Vallerie and John Doell from Canada who also started quickly. As far as I am concerned, success in networking really relies on being able to duplicate; in other words, being able to get people to actually start sponsoring. I have seen so often people with over 100 people in their organizations that have no one else sponsoring, and they get tired and discouraged quite quickly. In my company, many people actually boast about having really committed algae eaters, which is wonderful, but without business builders they don't have real growth. I have come to realize that these kind of people are stuck because deep inside themselves they have some reservations about network marketing as a business. Usually these folks are very product oriented and quite passionate about the algae and its reported benefits, and very good at transmitting this passion to others, but when it comes to sharing the business opportunity they do not have the same passion and are unable to excite others. They are, in fact, being very true to a part of themselves. Most of the time, I sense a lot of conflict with them, for they would like to have a bigger business, but their internal dialogue sends out such a contradictory message that they get stuck. One part of them wants more, another part says that they don't like "selling."e;
Personally I don't feel like I'm selling anything. I simply share the algae, the opportunity, and the vision with everyone I can. I have made a conscious commitment for my own personal growth to experience love with everyone I meet, and I share Cell Tech in the sharing of this love. I like to leave a lot of space to allow the person to do what they wish with this gift, because if I drag them into Cell tech I know that I'm going to drag them along most of the time. Just like Charles Possick who knows that there are plenty of people who will fall in love with this opportunity, I don't feel I need everyone I meet to get involved. I like to co-create with people who are excited and passionate about life, and who are willing to accept personal responsibility for getting what they want. I know there are lots and lots of people who would love to have me build the business for them, but I like to work with people who really love what they do. Networking is like life, and there are challenges along the path that I see as wonderful opportunities to find out who we really are by how we react to these challenges. In the end if we do too much for other people, we disempower them. I did this frequently with my children until I realized what I was doing.
We celebrate a lot in Cell Tech, Daryl always calls us "The Celebration Company,' and last year a lot of the distributors took a cruise together. During my first year in Cell Tech I had worked so hard and such long hours I hardly had any private time with my kids, so I took all four of them for a week long cruise with fellow distributors, then a week on the island of St. Lucia. During this time I got to meet personally with a lot of successful Cell Tech Double Diamonds, and I learned so much about what was working for them. It felt wonderful to be with so many like-minded people, and I felt my vision expand enormously as my thoughts congealed with theirs. I also enjoyed knowing that while I was away vacationing, my business was growing.
During this cruise, I gave a small talk about how I had helped my two older children build their business. When Charles had told me toward the end of January I should start creating executives, I started to put all my new leads under Jason and Jessica. I told them I was going to do this, and that until they decided to actually do the business I would ask them to put their checks back into the business; but when they actually started to build, then the check would be theirs. Jessica, the older of the two, was very passionate about riding and was working very long hours at a nearby stable. Jason was working in restaurants to earn extra income. When they both became executive at the end of February, Jason immediately got involved in building his own line, but Jessica seemed to have almost no interest. What was interesting is that without really doing Cell Tech, Jessica's business seemed to grow even faster than Jason's, who actually was very committed. Jessica, however, put forth tremendous passion and energy into her riding, waking at 5 am almost every morning, at least 6, and often 7 days a week. It taught me that God doesn't always send rewards necessarily where we might expect them. In other words, I think that when we give we always receive, but we might give to A and receive from B.
During this cruise, both Jason and Jessica came up on stage during one of the group presentations and were applauded for both being Diamonds (the level just before Double Diamond). Afterwards Jessica spoke to me and said she felt awkward being up there because she felt she hadn't really done much, but she also had gotten really excited now about the opportunity because of hearing Daryl and Marta speak and meeting all the Cell Tech people, she felt that she really wanted now to get involved. I understood then how easily we can make people feel disempowered even when we have good intentions. Six months later Jessica made Double Diamond, as did Jason, and it was totally due to their own efforts. They are now the two youngest Double Diamonds in the history of Cell Tech, and I am genuinely proud of them. Sara Finnerty was only 23 when she made Double Diamond, and this is inspiring more and more youth to explore the business opportunity.
We have a mentoring program in Cell Tech where debut Double Diamonds draw a mentor by lottery during our historic August Celebration, and five months later at her first Celebration Jessica drew Showshawne, the first Cell Tech Double Diamond. When he met her, he asked her what she had done to become a Double Diamond at such an early age, and she said, "I guess I just allowed it to happen". His reply was, "I don't think I need to teach you anything."
Often we don't allow
ourselves abundance.
Success is more about being than it is about doing,
which is why we are called human beings rather than human doings.
An added footnote of success for Jessica:
Just last week (1/8/97) Jessica married Darren, who is a musician she met on the cruise.
Darren became the 20th executive in Jessica's downline that qualified her for Double
Diamond, and they are building their business together now. They just moved to San
Francisco, where Jessica will work with a stable part time and Darren will continue with
his music. They are both excited about the freedom that Cell Tech has allowed them to
experience in their lives. Just yesterday we started working together on an audio
prospecting tape for the youth market, and we had a wonderful discussion about the choices
we make in our lives and how the quality of choices we make is reflected in the quality of
our lives, which leads right into my next subject, which concerns choices.
